Are there minimum hardware requirements for FME Server? Is there a way to estimate the minimum required amount of RAM,storage, and CPU?
Please seeFME Server Technical Specifications.Of the components that make up FME Server most have small footprints and take up small amounts of memory/CPU.The main component you need to plan for are the FME Engines.
FME Engines run the jobs and process the data and,as a result, will consume the most CPU and memory as compared to other FME Server components.
FME Engines are single threaded processes;you should therefore run a maximum of 1 engine per core - e.g.a quad core machine should have a maximum of 4 engines running. The faster the CPU on your machine, the faster your translation will run.
When processing large volumes of data,it is important to be aware of the amount of memory a single FME Engine can take advantage of.A standard 32-bit FME Engine can utilize up to 2GB of RAM on Windows 32-bit machines,or 3GB if we use the operating system's 3 GB switch (please seeUsing the Windows /3GB Switch with FME).On 64-bit windows machines,a standard 32-bit FME Engine can utilize up to 4 GB or RAM.
Reading and writing the data is one of the largest bottlenecks when running translations. If you are reading from a database over a network and the network is slow, that can have ahugeimpact on performance.Ideally, the datasets will be on the same machine as FME Server or you will have a very fast network connection between FME Server and the data.
Another way to speed up your translation is to ensure your workspaces are optimized.Make sure you only read in the data you need and avoid grouping transformers which consume lots of memory.
SeePerformance Tuning FMEfor tips on lowering processing times.
