Let's begin working with Microsoft Excel data by first viewing the data through the FME Data Inspector. The Data Inspector is used to preview data, both before and after translation, and is particularly useful for identifying where additional data formatting may be necessary. It is important to note that FME Data Inspectoris not an editing environment, and changes cannot be made to the source data through this application.
1)Start the FME Data Inspector and choose "Open a Dataset" from the File menu. For format, select Microsoft Excel, and choose the WeatherData2009.xlsx file.
2)You'll see that the data in the Excel spreadsheet is displayed in the Table View,a pane with a spreadsheet-like table.Since there is no geometry to display, the View pane remains empty.
3)The Table View displays the data contained in the Excel spreadsheet, with Attribute (Column) names displayed in bold. The data columns can be moved by clicking and dragging on the headers.
4)Right-clicking on the field name allows you to sort using several criteria;alphabetical/numeric,and ascending/descending.
5)Text values are presented left-aligned,and numeric values are right-aligned.Double-clicking on any cell will open a window that can be used to examine the cell's value. This is useful for viewing the precision of numbers, since numeric values are rounded to a single decimal place in the Table View.Note that this window cannot be used to make edits to the original data.
6)FME Data Inspector also includes filter functionality, and we can enter search terms to filter for Features (Rows) to be displayed. We can refine which Attributes (Columns) to include in the search by using the drop-down menu. For example,we can search by "any column",or select the name of a single column within our worksheet.
7)Every worksheet,(or named range),will be displayed as an individual tab at the bottom of the Table View.In this example,a single tab is displayed for "WeatherData2009",which indicates that the Excel Spreadsheet has a single worksheet.Tab order can be changed by simply clicking and dragging tabs as needed.
The FME Workbench documentation provides a comprehensive description of all components and controls within theFME Data Inspector Interface, including Menu Commands,Tools, and Shortcuts.
