Tutorial: Getting Started with FME Desktop|Previous: Read Data|Next: Add a Transformer
Visualizing data is a crucial step when building a workspace. It is essential to know how the data looks and what will need to be modified before the final output. In part two of this tutorial series, you will learn how to visualize data in FME Workbench 2020 using the Visual Preview window. If you are using FME Desktop 2018.1 and older, please seeGetting Started with FME Desktop: Introduction to FME Data Inspectorto learn how to inspect your data.

To watch the full video, see ourYoutube Channel. Please note that this video was made with FME Desktop 2019, and shows a bug in the data. The data should show 100 records, not 171.To correct this, download the data from this tutorial.
Continue working in the workspace from theprevious articleor download the2-ViewData-Begin.fmwtworkspace.
1.Run the Workspace
The data we added in the previous article can be viewed within FME Workbench. Before it can be viewed, the workspace needs to be run to cache the data.
On the top toolbar, click the Run Button. This will run the workspace, more details about running a workspace will be covered inGetting Started with FME Desktop: Write Data.
2.View Cache
Now that the workspace has been run, a magnifying glass icon appears on the Reader Feature Type, this indicates that the data has been cached and can now be viewed.Note that throughout workspace development, the workspace can be run and then the data cache can be viewed.
Click on the magnifying glass icon to open up the Visual Preview window.
Additionally, you can also skip the running the workspace step and just view the data.To do this, click on the reader feature type and then in the pop-up menu, click View Source Data.Note that this option is not available for all datasets, such as a dataset being read from the web.
3.Introduction to Visual Preview
There are three parts to viewing data using Visual Preview in FME.Each part allows the user to view their data in different ways.To use visual preview, ensure that the workspace has been run and then select an object to load.Note: If you clicked on the Magnifying Glass and Visual Preview opened but you don’t see any of the following views, click the icons on the left-hand size to toggle them on.
a.Table View
The Table view displays the dataset’s visible attributes.这些属性可以是分类或搜索explore your data.To toggle this view, click on the Table Buttonon the left-hand side of the window.Note that these attributes cannot be edited in Visual Preview, editing attributes will be covered in the next article.
b.Graphics View
If your dataset has a spatial component, graphic, geometry or coordinate values (like latitude and longitude), Visual Preview will display the graphics or geometry in the Graphics View.If there are no graphics or geometry, this view will not be available. To toggle this view, click on the Graphics Buttonon the left-hand side of the window.
c.Feature Information View
The Feature Information View is where any additional information about a feature can be found, including format-specific attributes and coordinate systems. To toggle this view, click the Show/Hide Feature Information Buttonon the left-hand side of the window.
4.Explore Data
With the Visual Preview window open view your dataset’s attributes and note what changes you would like to make to the column names.
If you are following along with the provided data, notice that First is missing “Name” to match Last Name.We will fix that in the next article as well as changing the order Last Name, and remove License Number.
5.Continue to Next Article
If you are continuing to thenext article, please leave your workspace open.
